Reality check

The work
Not established. The cited documents describe admission, not what engineers do day to day.
Entry requirements
  • After Class XII, IITs and IISc admit through JEE (Advanced)
  • NITs, IIEST, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes admit through JEE (Main) Paper 1.
  • Seats are allotted through the JoSAA portal, where registration is mandatory.
  • For NITs, IIEST, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes the 2026 bulletin asks for five Class XII subjects with at least 75% aggregate (65% for SC, ST and PwD) or a place in the top 20 percentile of the board.
Trade-offs to consider
  • Qualifying does not guarantee a seat: allotment depends on rank, category and the seat matrix, and each institute or programme can add requirements.
  • JoSAA says accepting an IIT or IISc seat without validly withdrawing it makes a candidate ineligible for JEE (Advanced) in later years.
  • The 2026-cycle JEE, JoSAA and institute fees are listed above
  • cut-offs, state entrance tests and pay after graduation are not established here.
