Reality check

From the sources
The work
  • UPSC lists supervising meteorological observations, providing climatological information and heading meteorological centres for the IMD Scientist-B post, and the Geo-Scientist examination recruits for the Geological Survey of India and the Central Ground Water Board.
  • Other day-to-day work is not established in these notices.
Entry requirements
  • Nearly every post checked asks for a Master's degree: the UPSC Geo-Scientist notice names M.Sc. subjects and none names B.Sc., IMD Scientist-B asks for a Master's in Mathematics, Physics, Atmospheric Science or Meteorology, and BARC recruits science postgraduates.
  • The one post that names a B.Sc. is IMD's Scientific Assistant, which asks for a Bachelor's degree in Science with Physics as one of the subjects.
  • Most of these notices are closed.
Trade-offs to consider
  • Posts carry all-India service liability, UPSC says appointments will first be made on a temporary basis, IMD's project Scientific Assistant posts are temporary for one year with no re-employment, and IMD says colour blindness disqualifies a candidate for Scientific Assistant.
  • Not established: working hours and shifts, which these notices do not state.
